What a catchy name to describe the new venue in Vegreville for musical performers of all ages! “Perogies and Jam” came about as a result of the enthusiasm of residents Don Harfield and Bob Ashmead along with Ellen Dunn of the Railway Station and it has just taken off from there.

The first event was on January 19 with approx 40 in attendance and this will be a regular occurrence every 3rd Saturday evening of the month at the Vegreville Train Station. There are many in the community who have come forward and want to showcase their talent at this event. The great thing about this is that family, friends and others from the nearby area can enjoy a good meal in an historic building and encourage local talent to hone their musical skills.

Perogies and Jam has a basic format including three time slots of 6:30 pm, 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm to present the talent of youth under 20 yrs, established players, and an open microphone for impromptu performers and/or jamming sessions. We are making plans for future events so it is not too early for interested musicians and singers to talk to us. On our first Saturday, the evening started off with members of the Fiddlin’ Kiddlins, followed by the local country and western group “Silver and Gold” with Rob Hughes helping out on the drums. Our plans for February 19 include the talented young singers of “B Cuz” who will be performing at 8 pm.

The name “Perogies and Jam” was chosen because it reflects many of the European roots of this community, and jam is a common term for impromptu playing of musicians who may never have played together before. Besides, Perogies and jam is a delectable food combination that you will want to sample for yourself – this is now being added to the menu at the Train Station.

The core group of organizers, players, and supporters applaud the talented musicians and the Railway Station for making this first night a success and invite others to join them every 3rd Saturday evening of the month.
