Opening the evening were local music teacher Debbie Fedoruk and seven of her voice students singing favourites such as Time in a Bottle, When You Wish Upon a Star, and Our Song. Debbie Fedoruk has taught voice for over 20 years, and been teaching voice and piano for the past four years here in Vegreville. After studying music and obtaining degrees from several post-secondary institutions, she taught voice to young adults at colleges in Edmonton and Calgary. After she began teaching her own children piano and voice, she started teaching other children and older students. Ranging in age from seven to sixty something, they learn a wide variety of styles including classical, folk, musical theatre, country, jazz and rock. While not every student is going to become a professional singer, Debbie believes that almost everyone can learn to make a nice sound and enjoy making music for the rest of their lives. Students performing this evening included Nicole Durrer, Ava Fried, Natasia Durrer, Ken Timanson, April Siggelkow, Bailey Stefan, and Debbie’s daughter Carissa. Debbie and Carissa finished the set with a duet called “Perhaps Love”.
An all evening “Open Mic” session then followed with a continuing emphasis on love songs. Local musicians included Ralph Lange, Winnie Lange (aged 5), Randy Kereliuk, Kayla Kereliuk, Wayne Camantigue, and Rob Hughes on drums. It was great to have Cassidy Zahar of Vilna, come perform several of her songs from her debut CD “This is Me” and have Paul Watson come from Edmonton.
Perogies and Jam is a not-for-profit music organization and is committed to developing an enduring live music scene in Vegreville by cultivating local musical talent.
