It was a wonderful sunny summer day for the first Vegreville downtown street market of 2012! Perogies & Jam musicians performed all day to an appreciative street audience, as residents and visitors alike explored the many kiosks and stopped to listen to the folk, country and blues style music.
We set up in the shade of a 10′ x 14′ tent, provided by the Town of Vegreville, early in the morning and by 10 am, music was filling the air. Except for adjustments to the equipment for the various performers, the music didn’t stop until 4 pm in the afternoon.
Opening the show was Randy Kereliuk, singing “Wrapped Around”, “Remember When”, and several other country songs. Barb Harmatys from Tofield was up next with several songs including “Jolene”, and “Till I gain Control Again”. Wayne Camantigue followed with songs including “Speedy Gonzales” and “Rhinestone Cowboy”. The backup band consisted of Ralph Lange on upright bass, and Rob Hughes kept the beat on drums.
B-Cuz, consisting of sisters, Brynn, Acadia, and Callista Rudyk (cousin Rylan Langkow was unable to attend) gave a terrific performance over the lunch hour, despite Acadia having a broken toe.
Cassidy Zahar, from Vilna, performed many songs from her recent CD entitled “This is Me”, including “I’m an Old Cowhand”, and They Call the Wind Mariah”, accompanied by Ralph (bass), Rob (drums), and Wayne (egg shakers).
Lorne Fill entertained the audience with “Grandma’s Feather Bed”, “All My Love” and “Alexander Beetle”. Ralph performed Dead Man’s Pants, 20 Flight Rock, and Mystery Train accompanied by Rob on drums.
For the rest of the afternoon, Perogies & Jam performers, consisting of Lorne Fill, Randy Kereliuk, Wayne Camantigue, Ralph Lange, Paul Watson (from Sherwood Park) and Rob Hughes, entertained the crowd. It was terrific to have a sunny day with no threatening rain. After the event, many of the performers played and sang at the Vegreville Train Station open mic for the evening. The “Open Mic” at the Train Station is a great way to get to know and jam with other local musicians.
Please note that there are two more Street Markets in downtown Vegreville scheduled for this summer on August 11 and September 8.
