It was great to see so many families going “unplugged” for the day in Vegreville on February 17. After a terrific breakfast at the Social Centre hosted by the Town of Vegreville and the County of Minburn, families got out and participated in activities of learn to curl, family skate, unplugged zone, bowling, hayrides, family swim and going to a “good ol’ hockey game” throughout the day.

Perogies and Jam musicians performed from 11 am to 3 pm in the Social Centre with over a 100 in attendance at any one time. To get everything going, Rachel Melenka started with toe tapping and dancing fiddle music. Lorne Fill warmed up the audience with folk songs including My Grandfather’s Clock and The Cat Came Back. Randy Kereliuk performed several country songs including Three Wooden Crosses and Country Roads. The Barter brothers Malachi on fiddle and Micah on ukelele played several well known fiddle tunes with their father Mike on guitar. Barb Mohr was up next with songs including Jolene, Wayfaring Stranger and A Life That’s Good. Gordon Forbes pleased Roger Miller fans with You Can’t Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd, and kids with Sneaky Snake. Peter Arnold and Don Harfield sang several songs including Puff the Magic Dragon, The Last Farewell, the Whistling Gypsy and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Keeping the beat through most of the performances was our versatile drummer Rob Hughes. To finish off the afternoon, all the performers came on stage for a rousing rendition of Farewell to Nova Scotia.

What a fun way to spend Family Day!
